Cummins has created the world’s first turbocharger for hydrogen engines
24.01.25
Cummins has unveiled a revolutionary development: the first turbocharger specifically designed for hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2-ICE).
This turbocharger was designed to provide high flow rates and the necessary boost pressure, which play a key role in maintaining the efficiency of hydrogen engines. It also helps minimize emissions while meeting strict environmental standards.
The development required solving complex technical challenges. These included adapting the compressor’s aerodynamic characteristics to changing lambda requirements, managing excess water formation during hydrogen combustion, and eliminating metallurgical problems associated with this type of fuel.
Hydrogen internal combustion engines, such as H2-ICE, are considered zero-emission in Europe, making them compliant with the upcoming Euro VII regulations. Cummins hopes that their innovative technology will be an important step towards environmentally friendly transportation.
