Ajax DoorBell: truly smart and secure video doorbell

Ajax DoorBell

The new device from Ajax Systems is a representative of the popular “smart” doorbells today. But like all the company’s devices, Ajax DoorBell has received a number of features that favorably distinguish it from others and at the same time make it an important element of the security system.

What is Ajax DoorBell

In fact, it is a video call with built-in artificial intelligence for object recognition, an infrared sensor and the ability to control via applications for smartphones and PCs. It has a built-in camera, speaker, microphone, improved Wi-Fi communication and a backup communication channel with the Ajax hub at a distance of up to 1700 m (in the absence of obstacles).

Design and ergonomics

Ajax DoorBell looks minimalistic, although the case is relatively large. A glossy surface with a camera lens and a large button around which there is LED backlighting in different colors “looks” at visitors. When pressed in call mode, the button is highlighted in white. In other modes, when removed from the mounting panel, for example, it glows green.

The smart doorbell is attached to a special panel, which in turn can be additionally fixed to the supplied spacers – it is turned to the side by 25° and tilted vertically by 10°. All of them have appropriate holes for laying power cables and complex doorbell wires.

There is a double speaker hole on the bottom. Quite loud and high-quality, by the way. When talking through the device, the voice is clear and both sides can be heard well. In particular, this is provided by a noise reduction and echo compensation system. There are no parasitic sounds during a conversation.

The case is offered in four colors – white, black and two shades of gray – lighter and darker, like ours.

The smart doorbell will fit perfectly into the corridors of new buildings or private houses. Ajax DoorBell will definitely attract attention in rooms with an unaesthetic appearance. And this is probably the only drawback – the fact that it is too attractive and there is a certain chance of its theft.

Equipment and support

Ajax DoorBell uses a camera module with a 4 megapixel sensor (2688 × 1520). The horizontal viewing angle is 155° and the vertical is 90°, which means we will see in advance when someone approaches the doorbell. There is HDR support and infrared illumination at a distance of up to 6 m.

In practice, all this means that the image transmitted by the doorbell is of high quality for these parameters and allows you to determine who is standing in front of the door or passing by both day and night.

An important feature is that the bell is not afraid of moisture and dust, having an IP54 housing protection. It can be installed both indoors and outdoors. In addition, you should not worry about its battery in the winter, Ajax DoorBell is even equipped with a battery heater. Nevertheless, it is not recommended to install the device in direct sunlight.

The camera has all the usual features for video surveillance devices: adjusting motion sensitivity, selecting response zones, adding to a video wall with other cameras. This is done using the proprietary video recorder Ajax NVR which we talked about earlier. And here it is important to note that, at first glance, a completely ordinary user device, Ajax DoorBell is used as a full-fledged element of a video surveillance system with various security features. For example, support for automation scenarios for responding to events together with other devices has been implemented. The call is also supported in applications for installation engineers and security or service companies: Ajax PRO Desktop, Ajax PRO: Tool for Engineers.

It can communicate with the hub via radio network protocols. Therefore, even if Wi-Fi is lost, events, alarms and photos will continue to be transmitted. When downloading a video, the proprietary Ajax Media Player media player, in turn, checks the integrity and originality of the video file via a digital signature. If the device receives a video without it, Ajax Media Player will reject the file download.

Like all Ajax video devices, the device uses not just passwords for authentication, but also the mTLS protocol. The system is less vulnerable to threats, it can be added to only one space.

Impressions and conclusions

Ajax DoorBell turned out to be not just a smart doorbell, but also a device with the capabilities of professional solutions for security and video surveillance. At the same time, the user receives not only notifications about motion detection, pressing a button, but can also trigger reactions on other devices, for example, sirens. Technically and functionally, it has everything you need and even more. Therefore, it is not surprising that the cost turned out to be quite significant, although competitors often do not have a combination of similar functions and certification according to international security standards.
