Review of the glo™ tobacco heating device

Technology does not stand still and this has become especially noticeable over the past few years, when electronic devices have crept even into the conservative tobacco industry. It is interesting that devices for heating tobacco began their history on the Japanese market, gradually coming to our stores. What is remarkable about the development from BAT, we will tell you further.

Background

The situation in the world is such that more and more people want to stop smoking traditional cigarettes or switch to less toxic options. The latter is relevant for people who do not want to quit, but want to continue receiving portions of nicotine. The very ritual of drinking a cup of coffee in the morning and communicating with colleagues during smoking breaks is also valuable to them. BAT proposed the glo™ device as a potentially reduced-risk alternative to smoking. It is stated that the sticks use natural tobacco, and the studies conducted are designed to confirm the reduced risk spectrum of this product

What is this?

glo™ was created according to the concept of British American Tobacco. The device involves the use of special sticks with tobacco, which is heated to a temperature of approximately 240-245 °C, resulting in the release of a nicotine-containing aerosol. At the same time, there is no combustion, therefore there is no smoke and less odor, which does not linger in the room, on hair or clothes.

Appearance and operation

This is a monolithic device with compact dimensions and a small number of moving elements. In terms of dimensions, glo™ is comparable to a small power bank. There is a sliding lid on top that provides access to the shaft for the sticks. At the bottom there is an opening plug, which is necessary for cleaning the device. Next to it is a Micro USB port for charging.

The body coating consists of two parts – glossy and matte. In our case it is pink, but three more are also available: black, gray and gold. The surface is resistant to minor scratches, and only the glossy part is marked.

The charge indication is made in the form of four LEDs located in a circle on the front part. There is a button in the center of this circle. A short press displays the amount of charge, where 1 diode is 25%, 2 is 50% and so on up to 100%.

The general concept is that the device can be used with several sticks in a row until the device’s battery runs out. A fully charged battery is enough to use 30 sticks. It should take approximately 3 hours for the battery to be fully charged when using a current of 2A.

To start using glo™, you need to insert the stick into the shaft and hold down the button for a few seconds. Vibration will occur and the circle of LEDs will begin to fill until operating temperature is reached – approximately 30 seconds. When the allotted time, which is 3.5 minutes, is exhausted, the device will vibrate again and the LEDs will turn off.

Device care

It is known that every “smoking” gadget, in addition to charging, requires personal care. In the case of glo™, this requires a cleaning brush, which is included in the kit. After use, you need to open all the hatches and sweep the brush several times in the shaft. In our experience, such a procedure is necessary once every 20 sessions.

Sticks and price

For glo™ there are branded sticks produced under the KENT Neostiks brand. They are available in five variants – Rich Tobacco, Bright Tobacco, Citric Mix, Dark Fresh and Fresh Mix. You can buy them in Ukraine at retail outlets, supermarkets and some gas stations. There is also a branded store with accessories and sticks in Kyiv, Lvov, Dnepr and Kharkov. A pack of Neostiks for this system costs 40 UAH. The starter set includes the glo device itself and a block of ten packs of sticks, which will cost UAH 1,899.

In the end

The market for tobacco heating devices is developing. There are already several manufacturers who offer their own model for using tobacco sticks. This device is notable for its ergonomic and understandable model of use. It doesn’t have too much functionality or too small parts. The required care is also not burdensome. All you need to do is carry the device itself, a pack of sticks and a charging cord, just in case. We in no way encourage smoking, using such devices if you have never smoked, or starting for fun. But experienced cigarette smokers who want to change the format and reduce the concentration of harmful substances may find glo™ interesting.
