North Korea is likely using artificial intelligence and cloud services to plan military operations
31.01.24
A report by 38 North, a think tank associated with the Stimson Center, points to North Korea’s active development in the field of artificial intelligence and the use of machine learning technologies to simulate combat operations.
According to the report’s author, Haek Kim, sanctions have limited the country’s ability to create its own artificial intelligence infrastructure, but it can access the necessary resources by leasing capacity from cloud service providers.
Kim is calling on cloud companies to strengthen customer vetting to prevent North Korea from using their services to develop military technology to circumvent UN sanctions. He also recommends that organizers of scientific conferences be careful to prevent scientists from collaborating with North Korea.
Experts say North Korea’s investments in artificial intelligence and potential access to cloud computing could boost the country’s military capabilities and ability to plan aggressive actions despite international sanctions.
