Americans increasingly use ChatGPT, but fear the consequences of AI
22.06.26
Today, the active use of AI chatbots in the United States shows an explosive growth rate, but such a rapid development raises many concerns among citizens. A recent authoritative study by the Pew Research Center shows a significant difference between how technology changes everyday life and people’s expectations: only 16% of respondents believe that smart systems will bring more benefits to society in the next 20 years, and 40% foresee a direct negative impact.
Pew Research

A year ago, only 33% of the United States population used generative AI tools. Today, this indicator has increased to 49%. Of those who use such solutions, about a quarter work with neural networks almost every day, another quarter turn to the technology several times a week.
At the same time, 51% of residents completely ignore these innovations. The largest percentage of those who categorically do not use smart assistants is observed among the older generation aged 50 and over.
What tasks are AI used for

Users have discovered a lot of application vectors for the use of chatbots:
- Searching for a variety of facts and answers instead of turning to the usual web resources — this trend is destroying the old mechanisms of traditional Internet business that live on direct clicks;
- Different work assignments and work organization;
- Editing of images, videos, generation of media content and entertainment;
- Advice in the field of health care, development of dietary menu rations or search for sports training plans. It should be noted that specialists and authors of the systems strongly urge not to use the obtained generations as a medical conclusion.
Service rating

Although the landscape of generative systems is rapidly expanding, the crown is still confidently held by one unchanging product. Statistics on the use of tools from major IT brands were distributed as follows:
- ChatGPT is the main absolute favorite – 44% use it;
- The share of Gemini from Google was 24%;
- Microsoft Copilot took third place with 17%;
- Meta AI confidently entered the list of sought-after assistants with an indicator of 14%.
Predictions on the impact of AI on the future

Predictions for the impact of neural network ecosystems remain worrisome. In addition to 40% of outspoken skeptics who believe that generative algorithms will only make society worse in the long run, another third of respondents expressed confidence that the technology will bring both good and destructive effects.
Purely on a personal level, the moods differ little. 31% of citizens fear that innovations will affect their comfort for the worse, against only 21% of expected positive personal changes. A key part of the distrust comes from Americans aged 18 to 29.
Fears around AI are growing
The general mass of users consider the current course of expansion of artificial intelligence to be excessively uncontrolled and aggressive. Residents fear serious reputational and personal losses:
- Two-thirds of Americans agree that the sphere is accelerating at an excessively high rate;
- Most people note the harm of the development of inviolability of their personal privacy;
- About 67% of citizens recognize the inability of their government to reliably keep the AI segment under strict supervision;
- About 60% of the audience do not trust the actions of large conglomerates responsible for the reasonable limits of the integration of such neural models.
