Google claimed a threefold increase in durability for the new foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold, but the reality proved otherwise. The device failed an extreme bend test conducted by popular tech reviewer Zack Nelson, the creator of the JerryRigEverything channel.

Testing Results

The test revealed serious design flaws in the device. The smartphone could not withstand the pressure and snapped at two points in the hinge area. Notably, these are the same exact weak spots found in previous generations of foldable Google Pixels. The expert pointed out that the main weakness is the placement of antenna lines directly in the hinge area, which compromises the structural integrity of the frame where maximum rigidity is required. Furthermore, upon deformation, it was observed that the outer display glass did not crack but instead detached from the frame in one solid piece.

Chronic Issues With Google Foldables

This is the fourth smartphone in Google’s foldable series to fail a durability test. The situation mirrors last year’s scandal with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which literally caught fire during an identical test. While the 11th version managed to avoid combustion, the catastrophic failure once again proves that Google engineers are still struggling to create a truly wear-resistant hinge mechanism.

Usage Nuances

  • The inner flexible screen is extremely vulnerable: even fingernails can leave scratches, which is typical for most foldable solutions.
  • IP68 protection does not guarantee full safety: fine dust and particles still penetrate the hinge mechanism, causing a characteristic crunching sound.
  • The rear panel is made of plastic; while this might prevent it from shattering during a drop, it significantly cheapens the premium look of the flagship smartphone.

The failure of the Pixel 11 Pro Fold in the bend test indicates that Google has yet to fully resolve the durability issues with its folding mechanism. It is particularly telling that the damage occurred in the exact same areas that were vulnerable in previous generations. Consequently, when choosing a foldable smartphone, users should consider not only display specs and performance but also durability test results.
