Apple Music to Introduce AI Music Labels
23.08.26
Apple Music is preparing a significant update for its users: by the end of 2026, the service will feature special “Made With AI” labels for compositions created with significant use of generative artificial intelligence. With this, the company aims to increase content transparency for listeners.
A New Labeling System
According to information from Apple addressed to music partners, labels and distributors will be required to disclose the use of neural networks when uploading new content. Labeling will be mandatory if AI was used to create a substantial portion of the material, even in cases where the rest of the work was performed by humans.
Transparency Metadata: Transparency Tags
This initiative is an expansion of the “Transparency Tags” system, which was implemented in March 2026. Previously, this data remained as internal metadata for content providers, but the information will now be made available directly to users. The labels allow for the disclosure of AI usage in four key release components:
- Album or single artwork
- Audio recording
- Composition (including lyrics)
- Music video
Content Control
At present, the labeling process relies on the good faith of distributors. Apple has not yet disclosed a mechanism for verifying content in cases where providers might attempt to hide AI involvement. Technically, if the corresponding field remains empty during upload, the system defaults to assuming the track was human-made.
The new Apple system will make the use of artificial intelligence in the music industry more apparent to the average listener. However, the question of verifying metadata accuracy and the ability to filter out AI compositions remains open. Apple already possesses content analysis tools, but their full application for verifying the origin of music has not yet been announced.
