Windows 11 Update Breaks Games: The RGB Fix

Обновление Windows 11 вызывает сбои в играх: виновата RGB-подсветка

The latest cumulative Windows 11 update (KB5121003), released in August, has caused widespread issues for gamers. Users are reporting sudden game freezes and critical errors leading to crashes.

Why Does Windows 11 Cause Game Crashes?

Microsoft has officially stated that the crashes are not caused by the lighting hardware itself, but rather by specific third-party software and drivers used to control RGB components. The issue stems from files similar in name to inpoutx64.sys, which are used in lighting control utilities. During the Windows update process, a conflict occurred that prevents certain gaming applications from launching correctly.

Affected Games and Error Symptoms

At this time, the corporation has officially confirmed performance issues with the following titles:

  • ARC Raiders
  • MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls
  • THE FINALS

The nature of the errors can vary: the game may simply stop responding, close suddenly with an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION message, or cause the operating system to reboot.

The Root Cause: inpoutx64.sys Driver Conflict

Developers at Embark Studios have confirmed that changes to the inpoutx64.sys file following the KB5121003 update are triggering the critical failure. This low-level driver is a common component for a multitude of hardware utilities, making the issue widespread among users of gaming PCs with RGB controllers.

How to Fix Game Crashes: Official Guidance

Microsoft has not yet released a final fix to resolve the conflict. As a temporary workaround, users are advised to:

  • Submit a report via the Windows 11 Feedback Hub.
  • Follow instructions from game developers like Embark Studios, who suggest temporarily removing or renaming the problematic driver to stabilize the system.

We are continuing to monitor updates from Microsoft regarding this issue.
