Microsoft Utility Forces Browsers to Use Bing

Microsoft has released a new application for Windows 11 titled Microsoft Recommended Search Settings. This utility is designed to automatically set Bing as the default search engine in popular third-party browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Brave.

What Is Microsoft Recommended Search Settings

This is not a system update component, but a standalone executable file named MicrosoftSettings.exe. Once launched, the program installs the Microsoft Bing Homepage & Search extension and modifies browser settings. Notably, the corresponding option is enabled by default, and once all processes are finished, the system automatically opens the Microsoft Rewards page.

According to tests, the utility successfully changes search parameters in the following browsers:

• Google Chrome
• Microsoft Edge
• Mozilla Firefox
• Brave

Working Nuances and Conflicts

In Google Chrome, the Microsoft extension attempts to change the home page and startup page settings. Because the extension requires permission to read and change data on websites, Chrome displays a corresponding warning to the user.

This creates a situation where the user is caught “between two fires”: the browser persistently suggests restoring Google Search, while the Microsoft extension urges keeping Bing as the default search provider.

Should You Install This Tool

At the moment, the utility is not a mandatory part of Windows 11. It cannot be found in Windows Update or the Microsoft Store. The tool, spotted by Windows tester Xeno Panther, remains an optional download. Microsoft has not announced plans for its forced integration into the operating system, so the decision to install it remains entirely with the user.
