Slate Auto’s Affordable Electric Pickup Is Here: Price, Pre-Orders, and Launch Details

Automotive startup Slate Auto, backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has officially announced the cost of its budget electric pickup truck. The new product is priced at $24,500, and the company has already begun collecting pre-orders from interested users.

What is known about the Slate Auto electric car

This electric pickup truck is positioned as a simple and functional solution without unnecessary technological complications. Unlike most modern models, the developers deliberately abandoned elements such as massive touch displays, autonomous driving systems or advanced artificial intelligence functions. The car was created for those drivers who need an exclusively utilitarian tool for daily tasks.

Main technical characteristics

Despite its budget, the car offers quite relevant indicators for the compact segment:

  • Drive type: rear electric motor.
  • Power plant power: 135 kW.
  • Course reserve on one charge: about 329 kilometers.

Configuration options and personalization options

One of the key features of the model is the flexibility of choice. Customers can decide for themselves what type of body they need – a standard pickup truck or a 4-seater SUV. In addition, at the configuration stage, a choice of different body colors, wheel designs and a set of necessary accessories is available, which allows you to customize the vehicle to the specific needs of the owner.

Release date and pre-order details

Mass production of the electric pickup truck is scheduled for this fall. Official deliveries of the vehicles are expected at the end of 2026. At this time, potential buyers can place a non-refundable deposit of $300, which must be paid within 30 days to secure a delivery date.

It is worth noting that the early stages of reservation, where you could make a deposit of $50, attracted more than 160 thousand people. For those who decide to place a full pre-order after the expiration of the 30-day grace period, access to the purchase will remain open, but the delivery waiting period will be shifted to a later period.

What’s the big deal about Slate Auto?

Slate Auto is all about pragmatism. If you are looking for a technologically loaded gadget on wheels, this project is not for you. However, if the $24,500 price and no-frills basics are important, the Slate could be an interesting alternative in the EV market. The interest in the product is also indicated by the attention of the industry: for example, the famous tech blogger MKBHD has already had the opportunity to personally get acquainted with the prototype of the car and present his impressions to the audience.

Expert opinion

From a market perspective, the Slate Auto’s big deal lies less in its electric powertrain and more in its attempt to bring a truly affordable new car back to the market. Today in Ukraine, most new electric vehicles cost between $22-25 thousand for compact models like the BYD Dolphin and around $24-27 thousand for more equipped MG4 class cars, while electric pickups and SUVs are usually in a completely different price category. If the Slate can keep its price at $24,500 and begin actual deliveries, it will become one of the cheapest new electric pickups in the world.

For the Ukrainian market, such a model is unlikely to become widespread due to the cost of delivery, taxes and the lack of official sales, but the very fact of the appearance of a budget electric pickup truck may increase pressure on manufacturers of traditional cars. Buyers are increasingly comparing not only characteristics, but also the cost of ownership, so the success of the Slate can push the market towards the release of simpler and more affordable machines without unnecessary electronics, where the main advantage will not be the number of screens and AI functions, but reasonable cost and practicality.
