Chinese company SmartSens has unveiled its flagship SCC85XS image sensor with 200MP resolution. Designed for top-tier smartphones, the new sensor combines high detail with hardware-based image processing technologies aimed at reducing the load on the device’s central processor.
Positioning

The SCC85XS is the latest development from SmartSens, created specifically for the flagship smartphone market. The company aims to compete with industry giants by offering a solution that combines high resolution with advanced image processing algorithms directly at the hardware level.
Technical Specifications

The sensor is based on the SmartClarity-SL Pro platform and is manufactured using a 22nm process. Key technical parameters include:
- Resolution: 200 MP.
- Individual pixel size: 0.61µm.
- For comparison: the popular Samsung ISOCELL HP2 features 0.6µm pixels.
The versatility of the solution allows it to be used not only as a primary module but also for wide-angle or telephoto optics.
Zoom and Detail Capabilities

Thanks to the hardware solution, the sensor supports the following crop modes:
- 2x zoom at 50 MP resolution.
- 4x zoom at 12.5 MP resolution.
Support for shooting in full 200 MP resolution allows for capturing images with high detail, matching the standards of modern high-end smartphones.
Low-Light Advantages and AI Processing


The manufacturer has paid significant attention to performance in challenging conditions:
- Read noise (in 200 and 50 MP modes) is approximately 0.8e-, which is 32% better than competing alternatives.
- Peak quantum efficiency reaches 80%.
A key innovation is the Hex Crop Remosaic and Quad Remosaic technology. These allow standard RAW data and video to be formed directly on the chip, offloading the central processor and accelerating AI algorithm performance.

The SmartSens SCC85XS appears to be more than just another megapixel race; it is an attempt to make the mobile camera a truly autonomous system. Offloading some of the complex processing directly to the sensor allows the smartphone to convert raw data into a finished image faster, preserving detail while reducing the load on the main processor. If manufacturers can realize the potential of the SCC85XS in mass-produced devices, the standard smartphone camera could take another step from a simple module to a full-fledged computational photography system.
