The Minimal Company continues to develop its “digital detox” concept by offering users a device that brings back the tactile pleasure of a physical keyboard. The Minimal Phone 2 project has become a massive hit on Kickstarter, with developers raising over $1.6 million against an initial goal of $100,000.

Minimal Phone 2 is a modern smartphone with a physical QWERTY keyboard, aimed at those tired of featureless touchscreens. The device’s main concept revolves around minimalism and user control over their digital time.

Technical Specifications

Thanks to the successful crowdfunding campaign, the team decided to significantly upgrade the device’s hardware. Each unit is now equipped with 12GB of RAM. A major change was the decision to abandon the E-Ink screen in favor of a more practical OLED panel. This allowed for a higher display refresh rate and eliminated the ghosting effects typical of “electronic paper” during animations.

The smartphone’s communication capabilities meet current standards: 5G network support, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, and a GPS module. Users have access to both a physical SIM card slot and eSIM functionality.

The phone’s keyboard resembles classic BlackBerry models but is enhanced with modern technology. The capacitive coating on the keys allows the device to recognize gestures while typing. The smartphone runs on Minimal OS, based on Android. An interesting, albeit controversial, feature is the integration of iMessage via the OpenBubbles service. It is worth noting that full functionality requires an activated Mac or a subscription costing $17 (EUR: €16.15, UAH: 760 UAH) per month.

The first shipments of Minimal Phone 2 are scheduled for December 2026 or early 2027. At this stage, backers can purchase the device for a minimum price of $600.

Minimal Phone 2 attempts to bring back to smartphones what has slowly disappeared during the race for bezel-less screens: the sensation of physical interaction. Here, the keys are not just an input method but part of a device philosophy intended to slow the user down and regain control over their digital environment. The success on Kickstarter shows that there is indeed interest in such a concept.
