Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 alerts users 5 minutes before fainting

Samsung breakthrough in preventive medicine: Galaxy Watch 6 can predict fainting 5 minutes in advance

Samsung Electronics, together with Gwangmyeong Hospital (Gwangmyeong Hospital) at Chung-Ang University (Chung-Ang University1), conducted a successful clinical study proving that standard consumer smartwatches like the Galaxy Watch 6 can become an important medical tool for preventing injuries related to loss of consciousness. Scientists developed a system that can detect the early onset of vasovagal syncope — the most common type of fainting caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate.

What is this technology and how does it work?

The technology is based on deep real-time data analysis. The main tool is the photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor built into the Galaxy Watch 6. Artificial intelligence processes heart rate variability (HRV) data and identifies specific patterns that precede fainting. This is the first time in the world that a mass-produced wearable device has demonstrated effectiveness in such a complex medical prediction task.

Technical characteristics and prediction performance

During large-scale trials involving 132 patients, the AI model demonstrated strong results consistent with clinical diagnostic standards. The system is designed for high accuracy to avoid false alarms while maintaining sensitivity to dangerous conditions.

Main performance metrics of the AI model

Parameter Value
Accuracy 84.6%
Sensitivity 90%
Specificity 64%
Warning time before an episode 5 minutes

Features of the warning system

The key feature of the development is the time window itself. A 5-minute warning before syncope gives users enough time to take safety measures: sit or lie down, stop driving, or seek help. Although vasovagal syncope is rarely life-threatening on its own, sudden loss of consciousness in public or while operating equipment often leads to serious secondary injuries such as fractures or concussions.

Scientific recognition and future development

The results of the joint work between Samsung and Chung-Ang University have been recognized by the scientific community and published in the prestigious journal European Heart Journal – Digital Health (Volume 7, Issue 4). Samsung sees this research as part of a global strategy to move from simple activity tracking toward a preventive healthcare model.

The company plans to further integrate such medical solutions into its wearable ecosystem. After completing certification and software optimization processes, the fainting prediction feature is expected to become available to a broader range of Galaxy Watch users.
