Failure as it is: Skull & Bones game sank, it was developed for 11 years
18.02.24
Pirate action Skull & Bones was in development for 11 years. Instead of becoming a first-class action game, the project from Ubisoft Singapore experienced numerous postponements, changes of managers and stuck in production hell. The result was predictable: the game was heavily criticized immediately after its release. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot called Skull & Bones is an AAAA-class game, but this is an exaggeration.
Skull & Bones receives poor reviews from critics who state that the game does not live up to its $70 price tag, the developers’ high-profile promises, and the desired quality. The only element to which there are practically no complaints is the combat system. Taking part in naval battles is fun, dynamic and spectacular, but it’s like a different game Ubisoft – Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, випущену 11 років тому.
In Skull & Bones has neither state-of-the-art graphics, nor an interesting plot, nor exciting activities, nor even sword fights. And there are no prospects for its further development, which is a disaster for a game-service. The only thing that could save the games is the transfer to a free-to-play distribution model.
As a result, the game received low scores and goes to the bottom: Opencritic – 60 points with 25% recommendations; Metacritic – 64 points. Skull and Bones is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
