Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred reveals the next chapter in the saga – and turns the Vessel of Hatred into a prologue
24.04.26
Blizzard Entertainment has released a release trailer for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, which makes it clear that the previous expansion, Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, was only the introduction to a larger story. Judging by the scenes and accents shown, the new chapter claims to be the central plot arc of the entire shooting support game.
A new stage in history: Skovos and the rise of Mephisto’s influence
The story continues the events of the previous expansion, but moves the action to Skovos, an ancient and isolated region of the Sanctuary that was previously largely unexplored in the series. It is here that a new phase of the conflict unfolds.
Mephisto is once again in the center of the story, whose influence is rapidly spreading to the sacred islands. The trailer highlights not so much the direct invasion as the gradual infection of the region by its power, which changes the balance of power and forces the local residents to fight not only with the demons, but also with the consequences of their presence.
New figures appear in the story, including the Queen of the Amazons and the prophet Akarat, which indicates the expansion of the lore and the deeper integration of the previously secondary elements of the universe.
Classes and mechanics: bet on a massive update
One of the key elements of the expansion will be the return of the Paladin, one of the most anticipated classes in the community. Together with him, a new class will appear in the game – the Sorcerer, focused on dark magic and an alternative style of passage.
However, the main change is not in the number of classes, but in the reworking of the basic systems. Blizzard Entertainment focuses on deepening images and variability:
- updated skill trees expand customization options for all existing specializations;
- the character’s maximum level increases to 70, which opens up additional stages of progression;
- the Horadric Cube returns, allowing you to combine and modify items, boosting the crafting element.
Endgame restart
Serious changes will also affect the final stage of the game. The War Plans system actually gives the player control over the structure of the endgame content: you can choose activities, customize conditions, and add modifiers that affect difficulty and rewards.
Thus, the endgame becomes not a fixed set of activities, but a flexible system that adapts to the player’s style.
In addition, the developers introduced a mechanic atypical for the series – fishing. It performs the role of an “unloading” element and expands the spectrum of activity beyond constant battles.
From introduction to climax
The expansion was previously announced at The Game Awards 2025, where key innovations were confirmed, including the return of the Paladin. Against this background, Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred now feels like a preparatory stage with mechanics, but without a full story conclusion.
Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred, judging by the current materials, should be the part where the story develops and reaches its climax.
Release date
The add-on is scheduled for release on April 28, 2026. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Pre-order users have already received early access to some of the content, including some gameplay elements.
