Apple Retires the Mac Pro: The End of a 20-Year Legacy
30.03.26
Apple has officially retired the Mac Pro, ending a twenty-year run for the desktop that once defined its professional lineup. The product page has already vanished from the official store, signaling the end of an era for the company’s flagship workstation.
Debuting in 2006 to succeed the Power Mac G5, the original Mac Pro was a modular powerhouse. Users enjoyed full control over the CPU, RAM, storage, and expansion cards within its tower chassis, making it a favorite for professionals requiring high customization.
The design remained stable until 2012, followed by the 2013 overhaul often referred to as the ‘trashcan’ Mac. This controversial shift prioritized compactness over modularity, leaving only RAM and storage upgradeable. Thermal constraints eventually doomed this iteration, as the design could not handle the heat of more powerful components.

Apple pivoted back to modularity in 2019 with its third major design revision. While the CPU remained fixed, almost every other component was user-replaceable. This Intel-based machine arrived just as Apple began its historic transition to proprietary ARM-based M-series silicon.

The final update came in 2023 with the M2 Ultra chip. However, the move to M-series architecture restricted the utility of PCI expansion slots, dampening the computer’s appeal to enthusiasts. The Mac Studio eventually took the lead as Apple’s performance flagship, leaving the Mac Pro without a clear purpose in the current lineup.
Insider Mark Gurman notes that Apple had planned this exit for some time. In an era of integrated components, a massive, mostly empty chassis like the Mac Pro felt like an anomaly. Apple’s modern philosophy has shifted away from the modularity the Pro once represented, making its departure inevitable.
Despite its retirement, the Mac Pro leaves behind a legacy of industrial design and high-end performance. It remains a symbol of a specific era in professional computing that many believe deserved a more robust continuation.
