The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Returns to Digital Stores

Aspyr Media, a studio renowned for its high-quality ports of classic projects, has introduced The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition. The game, which was removed from digital storefronts for a long time due to an expired licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is finally returning to its audience.

War in the North — Legacy Edition

This is a classic co-op action game set in The Lord of the Rings universe. Originally developed by Snowblind Studios in 2011, the title offers a unique story running parallel to the events of the first film and the book The Fellowship of the Ring. In this version, the game has been adapted for modern operating systems and gamepads, featuring high-resolution support and optimization for current hardware resources.

Gameplay and Features

At the center of the narrative is a mission to defend the North from Sauron’s servant, the Numenorean Agandaûr. Players are invited to journey through solo or co-op battles playing as one of three unique heroes:

• Eradan — a Ranger swordsman;
• Andriel — an Elven mage;
• Farin — a Dwarf warrior.

Players will visit iconic locations such as Rivendell, Lothlórien, and the Lonely Mountain, facing off against orcs, trolls, wargs, and the dark army of Agandaûr, who is capable of summoning creatures of Shadow.

The re-release is now available on the following platforms:

• PC (via Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store);
• PlayStation 5;
• Xbox Series.

For European owners of Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, the game will become available on October 18.

Legacy Edition does not claim to be a full-fledged remake, but it does return one of the more unique projects in The Lord of the Rings universe to a modern audience. Improved technical performance makes the game more comfortable on current devices, and the co-op mode and familiar locations are sure to interest both fans of the original and those who missed its 2011 release.
