Xodus Project Targets Xbox Gaming on Linux Without Windows

Linux users awaiting official Xbox PC and Game Pass support have received a new glimmer of hope from a group of enthusiasts. The Xodus project is an attempt to implement open-source game support through reverse engineering. The team’s primary goal is to make it possible to launch Xbox titles that use the GDK format outside of the Windows operating system.

Project Features and Technical Nuances

Xodus developers are focused on creating a toolkit that will enable the execution of GDK and MSIXVC format games on other platforms. A notable aspect of the project is the involvement of developers who previously worked on Heroic Games Launcher, the well-known open-source launcher for the Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Prime.

At this stage of development, the program’s features include:

• System authorization.
• Downloading game packages.
• Acquiring game licenses.

Despite the progress, running the actual titles may require additional configuration and patches for Wine, DXVK, or VKD3D-Proton tools. This means the team still has a significant amount of work ahead to ensure stable performance for each individual title.

Microsoft’s Stance

It is important to note that the Xodus project has not received official approval from Microsoft. This carries inherent risks: the corporation could update its security architecture at any time, potentially rendering third-party execution impossible. Nevertheless, enthusiasts continue to develop the system, and the project’s source code is already available on GitHub.

Xodus is currently in the early stages of development and cannot guarantee a stable launch for the entire Xbox library. However, the project is of great interest to the Linux community, as it has the potential to eliminate the need for users to switch to Windows just to play games that utilize GDK.
