From Disastrous Launch to Gaming Icon: No Man’s Sky Turns 10

A Decade of Change: How No Man’s Sky Went From Failure to Success and Announced the COSMOS Update

The release of No Man’s Sky in August 2016 went down in video game history as a textbook example of a disastrous launch. The technical state of the product was critical, and the promises made by Hello Games and its lead, Sean Murray, were far removed from reality. However, contrary to expectations, the developers did not abandon the project.

Over the past 10 years, the game has undergone a colossal transformation thanks to dozens of global free updates and patches. Today, the project rightfully takes its place among the most revered games in the genre.

What Hello Games Prepared for the 10th Anniversary

In honor of the project’s decade, the team released a retrospective trailer demonstrating how No Man’s Sky has evolved over the years. Simultaneously, the developers announced the next major update — COSMOS, with details promised to be revealed later.

From Fiasco to Success

The studio head thanked the multi-million strong No Man’s Sky community for the support that helped the game achieve impressive results. Key highlights include:

  • A record number of users recorded this year.
  • TGA and BAFTA awards for best ongoing support.
  • More than 40 free content updates, including base building, mechs, pets, new ship types, and an expedition system.
  • The game’s arrival on a wide range of platforms, including Nintendo Switch, Xbox, VR, PSVR, Switch 2, PS5, and other devices.

Despite the massive amount of added content, according to Murray, players have explored less than 1% of the planets in the game’s procedurally generated universe. The studio continues to work on the title while keeping its core team largely intact.

Available Platforms

At present, the project is available to play on the following platforms:

  • PC (via Steam and Microsoft Store)
  • PlayStation
  • Xbox
  • Nintendo Switch

The story of No Man’s Sky is a rare example of how developers can completely change the audience’s perception of their project. Hello Games did not walk away from the game after a catastrophic start; instead, they spent ten years consistently fixing errors and adding new content. Now, the studio is preparing COSMOS, proving that the journey through the No Man’s Sky universe is far from over.
