Google Pixel Tag Debuts With UWB Support and One-Year Battery Life

Google has officially unveiled the Pixel Tag, an item tracker designed to compete with gadgets like the Apple AirTag and Samsung Galaxy Tag. The new tracker is fully integrated into the Google ecosystem and uses the Find Hub network for object tracking.

Built with a stainless steel housing, the tracker offers high resistance to bending and physical damage. The device carries an IP67 rating, ensuring full functionality against dust and water exposure. It is equipped with a Bluetooth module supporting Channel Sounding and a UWB (Ultra-Wideband) chip for high-precision location tracking. An integrated speaker allows for audible alerts to aid in searching, while a dedicated button on the tag lets users trigger a sound on their paired smartphone.

Battery Life and Setup

Google claims that the Pixel Tag offers up to one year of battery life, with the user-replaceable battery design ensuring long-term usability. Setup is simple: just remove the protective tab and bring the tracker near an Android device running OS version 9 or later. Thanks to Google Fast Pair, the pairing process is instantaneous.

Security and Functionality

Users can share tracker data with up to 10 other people for collaborative item tracking. The Left Behind alerts feature notifies the user if they move away from their item. A robust security system is also in place: if an unknown tracker is detected moving with you, your phone will automatically send a notification with instructions on how to locate the tag and what steps to take next.
