Lexar Unveils Muse: The World’s Thinnest Portable SSD at Just 1mm

Lexar has introduced a new standard in drive design with its Muse series of portable SSDs. This device is aimed primarily at aesthetic perfection and a minimalist form factor, challenging perceptions of how compact a storage drive can actually be.

What Is the Lexar Muse SSD?

Lexar Muse is an innovative external SSD designed with a focus on an ultra-thin construction. According to the manufacturer, it is the thinnest device in its class. It is an ideal solution for users who value both style and portability when handling data.

Design Features and Specifications

Lexar engineers have managed to pack modern hardware into an incredibly compact chassis:

  • Dimensions: 3.8mm (0.15 inches) at its thickest point and only 1mm (0.039 inches) at the edges.
  • Weight: The device weighs just 26.5 grams (0.93 ounces).
  • Storage Capacity: Available in 512GB and 1TB configurations.
  • Performance: Rated read speeds reach 1050 MB/s, with write speeds of up to 1000 MB/s.
  • Internal Hardware: Features a custom ultra-thin printed circuit board (PCB).

At this time, it remains unclear whether the drive includes a DRAM buffer, which is crucial for maintaining stable speeds during extended high-load tasks.

Connectivity and Compatibility

One of the key design features is the omission of a traditional USB-C port on the device itself. Instead, Lexar utilizes a proprietary magnetic SnapLink cable that attaches to a spring-loaded interface on the back of the SSD. Notably, the other end of the cable features a standard USB-C connector.

For owners of modern tech, a special case with MagSafe support is provided. This allows the drive to be easily attached to the back of most modern iPhones or to the lids of laptops with metallic surfaces.

Pricing and Availability

As of now, Lexar has not officially disclosed the pricing for the device. Given the current market conditions regarding DRAM and NAND chip costs, it is expected that the premium form factor of the Muse will make it a relatively expensive product. Sales are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
