AMD Unveils Threadripper Halo Station: A 96-Core AI Powerhouse

AMD has announced its most powerful workstation for professional tasks to date: the Threadripper Halo Station. This liquid-cooled system is designed for the local execution of large-scale artificial intelligence models. The unveiling took place during the company’s keynote at IFA 2026 on September 4, 2026.

AMD Threadripper Halo Station Technical Specifications

At the heart of the station is the 96-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX processor, boasting 96 Zen 5 cores and 192 threads. The system comes equipped with 2 TB of RAM and two Instinct MI350P graphics accelerators. Each accelerator features 144 GB of HBM3E memory, providing a total of 288 GB for the current configuration. The company plans to increase the accelerator count to four in the future, which will boost the total HBM3E memory capacity to 576 GB. AMD claims this power enables local processing of AI models with over one trillion parameters.

Operational Requirements and Power Consumption

Given the requirements of four MI350P accelerators (600W each) and a 350W processor, the total power draw under full load can exceed 3 kW, accounting for cooling systems, storage, and other components. Such significant power consumption positions this device as a tool for server rooms rather than home offices.

Competition: Nvidia DGX Station

The primary competitor for this system is the Nvidia DGX Station. It is based on the GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra chip, which combines a 72-core Grace CPU with a powerful Blackwell Ultra graphics chip (252 GB HBM3e and 7.1 TB/s bandwidth). Nvidia utilizes a coherent architecture with 748 GB of system memory, providing direct CPU-to-GPU interaction via NVLink-C2C (900 GB/s). AMD, meanwhile, leans on a traditional x86 workstation architecture, offering up to 2 TB of total system memory.
