Tesla released FSD 14 Lite for HW3-based electric vehicles: what has changed and why is it not a full-fledged robotaxi?

Tesla has finally released the long-awaited version of its autopilot software FSD 14 to its vast fleet of vehicles equipped with HW3 computers. Due to hardware memory limitations, the version is called FSD 14 Lite, since stock systems are not capable of processing the AI ​​calculations required for the full functionality of the FSD 14 package.

According to Tesla executives, the new firmware is a “distilled” capability of the AI4 hardware, adapted for older chips. It is worth understanding that the current assembly does not allow the launch of a full-fledged autonomous mode (without driver control). Key features added in this version:

Previously, Elon Musk stated that if the current hardware does not support a full-fledged autonomous FSD, Tesla will install new computers and AI4 cameras for free for owners, turning the car into a robotaxi. However, at the moment, HW3 owners only receive a lightweight version of the software, which raises questions about the implementation of the initial promises.

The update is currently in limited availability for early adopters. The issue of subscription pricing for FSD 14 Lite remains open and will become clearer in the coming weeks. There are speculations about the introduction of a multi-level subscription, where the cost for owners of old HW3 cars will be lower than for users with the latest equipment who are ready to provide a car for a robotaxi fleet.

Is it worth upgrading?

While the FSD 14 Lite brings useful improvements in comfort and parking, it is not a complete replacement for hardware upgrades. Most likely, priority for re-equipment (retrofit) will be given to owners who agree to rent out their electric vehicles for use to an unmanned taxi service, since this is economically feasible for the company.
