Sora let Hollywood down: AI cartoon Critterz postponed the premiere in Cannes
25.05.26
The first-ever feature-length AI animated film Critterz missed its scheduled debut at the Cannes Film Festival due to the shutdown of the Sora video generator by OpenAI. This ambitious project was expected to demonstrate to the entire industry how much generative AI can accelerate traditional manufacturing. However, due to technical force majeure, the creators physically did not have time to finish the final editing on time and postponed the world premiere of the picture.
Currently, the film’s director and part-time OpenAI creative strategist Chad Nelson, together with his producer James Richardson, are actively looking for a new reliable technology partner and distributor in Cannes.
From a five-minute DALL-E sample to a full meter
The history of the experiment began back in 2023. Then the authors released a debut five-minute short film for unusual forest creatures Critterz, which was created using the popular DALL-E image generator. After successful feedback, a decision was made to produce a large-scale full meter.
The plot of the full-fledged cartoon is based on the touching story of an animal that goes in search of its long-lost brother. The creative team has already completed the character design, fully prepared the story script and rendered a number of demo scenes. Production processes will continue without delay immediately after concluding an agreement with a new supplier of modern generative neural networks.
Peculiarities of production of AI cartoons
The use of neural network technologies multiplies the standard resources required for the release of projects of this scale. The ratio of speed, human resources and finances here looks revolutionary:
- A regular Hollywood Disney-level animated film requires the involvement of more than 300 specialists, about 3 years of painstaking development and a colossal budget of around $200 million.
- At the same time, the Critterz project was created in a modest 9 months by a small team of only 15 professionals.
Despite the initial positioning, the authors emphasize that Critterz is a completely independent film, and the OpenAI company itself does not directly finance this project and does not act as its producer.
The film’s producer, James Richardson, refused to directly name the fixed budget of creation. However, according to authoritative data from the Wall Street Journal, the cost of producing a unique animation is approximately $30 million.
Nuances of unexpected shutdown of the OpenAI Sora generator
The disruption in timings was caused by OpenAI unexpectedly ending support for the Sora project in March 2026. The service ceased to exist literally six months after the extremely loud and triumphant release for Android. Moreover, it was Sora that was planned for implementation at the largest Hollywood studios – the Disney film company was already expecting to become an investor and a top key customer of the OpenAI Sora generator shortly before the sudden stop of this large-scale technological project.
Due to a schedule glitch, the original release date was moved. Currently, the long-awaited launch of Critterz is tentatively targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
