NVIDIA introduces DLSS 5 technology for PC gaming

NVIDIA has announced the launch of DLSS 5, an AI-based image upscaling system for personal computers. The technology is designed to improve performance and enhance graphics in modern-generation games. According to Jensen Huang, DLSS 5 could become one of the key milestones in the development of PC gaming since the introduction of ray tracing in 2018.

The new version continues the Deep Learning Super Sampling lineup, focusing on more advanced artificial intelligence algorithms and updated frame generation methods.

What Is Known About the Technology

According to the company, DLSS 5 uses next-generation neural network models trained on a significantly larger dataset of game content.

One of the major updates is the improved frame generation system. DLSS 5 can create intermediate frames between already rendered frames, increasing overall performance without significantly burdening the GPU. This results in a smoother gameplay experience, particularly when ray tracing is enabled and graphics settings are high.

The neural network recognizes elements of the scene, such as characters, hair, skin, and fabric surfaces, and adapts them to the surrounding environment. This enables more natural lighting and accurate material rendering in three-dimensional models.

The system also reduces input lag. New data processing algorithms help decrease delay, which is especially important for competitive gaming.

Comparing DLSS5 and DLSS4

DLSS 4, released in 2024-2025, was already impressive: Multi Frame Generation allowed for the generation of up to 3-5 frames per rendered frame, resulting in a 4-6x FPS increase on RTX 50 series cards. Even back then, it seemed like magic. DLSS 5 goes further.

This introduces generative AI, which analyzes not just pixel images but the semantics of the scene—it understands the location of the light source, how it interacts with materials, and how objects move.

Based on this analysis, the neural network adds details that weren’t present in the original render. Roughly speaking, while previously the AI ”enlarged a photo,” now it “imagines how the scene would look in reality” and reproduces it.

Integration and Release Timeline

DLSS 5 will be available through the updated NVIDIA Streamline toolkit, which simplifies the integration process for developers. Major studios are already working with the technology, including Bethesda, CAPCOM, Ubisoft, NetEase, NCSOFT, Tencent, and Warner Bros..

Among the first games to support DLSS 5 are Starfield, Resident Evil Requiem, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Delta Force, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

The full release of DLSS 5 is scheduled for autumn 2026.
