Nintendo is ending sales of the first-generation Switch consoles in Europe

Nintendo has officially announced a landmark event for the European gaming market. From the middle of February 2027, the sale of the entire Nintendo Switch line of the first generation in Europe will be discontinued. This applies to all current versions: the base model, the portable Nintendo Switch Lite and the advanced Nintendo Switch OLED.

Why is the Nintendo Switch being withdrawn from sale?

The decision is dictated by the requirements of the legislation of the European Union. According to the new regulations, the sale of electronic gadgets without the possibility of easy battery replacement will be limited. The company decided not to modify the old devices, but to gradually withdraw them from circulation in the European region.

What will change for European buyers

It is important to note that until the specified deadline (mid-February 2027), official retailers retain the right to purchase current Nintendo Switch models in the necessary volumes. No restrictions are imposed at the moment.

For the company, the move marks the end of the 10-year life cycle of the wildly popular console that revolutionized mobile gaming. At the moment, Nintendo has no plans to stop selling the first Switch in other regions, with the exception of Europe.

What will change?

The Japanese manufacturer has prepared a replacement in advance. As early as the summer of 2026, an updated version focused on compliance with environmental regulations will be presented in European countries. It has been officially confirmed that the new model (tentatively called Nintendo Switch 2) will receive a redesigned design that allows for a simpler battery replacement procedure that fully complies with updated EU regulations.

Is it worth buying now?

For users planning to buy a game system, Nintendo’s decision only means that they need to consider the date of the end of supply. The original Switch remains a relevant platform with a huge library of games. However, if the possibility of long-term official service support in European countries after 2027 is important to you, you should pay attention to future revisions of devices that are already being designed taking into account the new technical regulations.
