Sony Seeks Its Own Mario: A New Mascot Strategy Unveiled
18.08.26
Sony has decided to strengthen its branding strategy by creating characters capable of becoming recognizable company symbols, standing alongside legends like Mario and Hello Kitty.
Why Does Sony Need New Mascots?
The corporation is betting not just on audience reach but on significant monetization. By 2030, Sony plans to achieve an annual revenue of 10 billion yen from products related to its new mascots. This includes merchandising such as toys, t-shirts, backpacks, and other licensed goods. The main goal is to create a “face” for the brand that will shape the company’s image for decades to come.
The Sony Creative Products division is responsible for executing this task. A dedicated team has been formed to work closely with external contractors. The primary goal is to combine internal creative assets with external expertise to give birth to truly global characters.
Astro: The Leading Mascot Candidate
Currently, the company already possesses one character who perfectly fits the criteria. Astro, the robot from the eponymous action-platformer series, has the necessary qualities: he evokes positive emotions, is recognizable, and feels modern. His image could potentially serve as the locomotive for the entire strategy.
Community Response and Satirical Characters

While the Japanese giant builds its serious mascot strategy, the gaming community has not remained on the sidelines. Former IGN journalist Destin Legarie proposed an ironic character option — “Disc-guy.” The idea emerged as a response to Sony’s unpopular decision to discontinue physical discs by 2028. The concept sparked a wave of approval among gamers, highlighting that a mascot must resonate with the values and demands of real consumers, not just the corporation’s marketing plans.
Sony’s new strategy shows that the company views characters not just as an element of the gaming industry, but as independent commercial assets. Astro already has the necessary recognition, but the creation of additional heroes will allow Sony to form a broader brand universe. Meanwhile, the community’s reaction demonstrates that the success of such an initiative will depend not only on marketing decisions, but also on how much the characters can genuinely engage consumers.
