Alibaba Sells Lingxi Games to Fuel AI Ambitions

Alibaba sheds gaming business for AI expansion: a $1.5 billion deal

Chinese tech giant Alibaba has decided to sell its gaming asset, Lingxi Games. The buyer is the Asian investment firm Trustar Capital. This move is part of a large-scale reorganization of the holding under the leadership of CEO Eddie Wu.

What Is Lingxi Games and What Is Alibaba Selling?

Lingxi Games is the company’s key gaming division, best known for its multiplayer online strategy game Three Kingdoms: Strategy Edition. Studio CEO Zhou Binshu confirmed that the deal is aimed at reallocating resources toward Alibaba’s priority strategic business areas.

Why Is Alibaba Selling a Profitable Business?

The decision to sell is driven by strict corporate optimization. As part of its transformation, Alibaba is shedding non-core assets to focus on cloud computing and artificial intelligence development. The company’s financial ambitions are significant: within the next five years, Alibaba plans to reach $100 billion in revenue specifically from its AI segment.

The sale of Lingxi Games reflects a major strategic shift for Alibaba. The company is gradually moving away from areas it does not consider key to future growth, concentrating resources on cloud technologies and AI. Meanwhile, the gaming business remains a valuable asset, and the $1.5 billion deal will allow Alibaba to secure additional resources to pursue its ambitious plans in the field of artificial intelligence.
