DongSu: China Deploys World’s Largest LFP Energy Storage System

China continues to lead in energy infrastructure. On August 3, the DongSu facility was commissioned in Inner Mongolia, marking the world’s largest single-site energy storage system based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. This project is a critical step toward stabilizing the region’s power supply, which features a high share of renewable energy sources.

DongSu Project Details

The scale of the complex is impressive, covering an area of approximately 28 hectares. Total investment in the energy hub amounted to roughly 3 billion yuan (445 million USD / 411.4 million EUR / 18,696,650,000 UAH). According to preliminary government estimates, the complex is capable of supplying up to 1 TWh of electricity to the grid annually, providing flexible resource distribution during peak load periods.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

The system is designed as a four-hour energy storage unit. Its key parameters include:

  • Power output: 1 GW.
  • Total capacity: 4 GWh.
  • Cell type: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP).

The primary task of the complex is grid balancing. The use of advanced grid-forming inverter technology allows DongSu to operate in autonomous mode when determining frequency and voltage, which is critical for maintaining stability during generation fluctuations from solar and wind farms.

Innovation and Strategic Future

Implementing such solutions has become a necessity for Inner Mongolia due to the rapid growth of “green” energy. Intelligent grid management allows for the mitigation of weather-related variability that often impacts wind and solar generators. Between 2026 and 2030, Chinese authorities plan to deploy a network of similar stations nationwide, supported by advanced energy consumption forecasting systems.

The launch of DongSu demonstrates how quickly China is scaling its electricity storage infrastructure. The system is capable of compensating for generation fluctuations from renewable sources and supporting grid stability during peak loads. If government plans are realized, such energy storage facilities could become a vital pillar of the country’s national energy infrastructure in the coming years.
