Samsung Galaxy S22 Series Gains Official LineageOS 23 Support
18.08.26
The Samsung Galaxy S22 series has received official support for the popular custom ROM, LineageOS. The base Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra can now upgrade to LineageOS 23, based on Android 16, allowing owners to extend the software life of their smartphones after official support from Samsung ends.
Official Samsung Support Limitations
The Galaxy S22 smartphones were released in 2022 running Android 12. Samsung’s update policy at the time covered four generations of Android updates for these devices. Consequently, Android 16 will be the final official system version. Unlike newer lineups, starting from the Galaxy S24, the S22 series was not included in the extended seven-year support program and is missing from the list of devices expected to receive One UI 8.5.
LineageOS 23: Moving to Android 16
The LineageOS project has officially confirmed adding the entire S22 lineup to its list of supported devices. These are not enthusiast ports but full official builds. The current version, LineageOS 23, is based on Android 16. This provides users with the prospect of using up-to-date Android versions even after Samsung stops official support, and potentially receiving corresponding software if developers move to Android 17.
Nuances and Risks of Installation

While the 2022 hardware platform remains capable, switching to custom firmware carries technical consequences. Users must unlock the bootloader, which involves personal risks. Furthermore, installing third-party software may lead to the loss of access to Samsung-specific features, including One UI, specialized camera processing algorithms, Galaxy AI tools, and the inability to use services based on the Knox security platform.
Official LineageOS support makes the Galaxy S22 more durable from a software perspective. The smartphones still feature a sufficiently powerful hardware platform, making the installation of current firmware a viable alternative to purchasing a new device. However, users should consider the potential loss of Samsung features before making the switch.
