HONOR Robot Phone in Cannes: a step towards the fusion of film industry and mobile technology

This year’s Cannes Film Festival became a platform not only for film premieres, but also for the demonstration of future technologies. At the 79th festival, HONOR presented its experimental HONOR Robot Phone as part of the China Night event “From Tradition to Tomorrow”, dedicated to the transformation of the film industry in the era of artificial intelligence. The brand also became the sole partner in the Imaging segment, underscoring its ambitions in the field of mobile photography.

A camera that behaves like a cameraman

The key idea of the HONOR Robot Phone is the rejection of a static camera. The device uses a robotic module on a movable arm: when activated, it slides out of the case and starts working independently in the frame.

Basically, the smartphone tries to reproduce the operator’s behavior: the camera can turn, follow objects and adapt to the movement of the scene without the user’s participation. This turns the device from an ordinary smartphone into a hybrid of a mobile gadget and an automated shooting system.

The main focus is on simplifying the process of shooting dynamic content as much as possible — from short clips to more complex scenes.

Artificial intelligence instead of manual control

The behavior of the live camera is responsible for a set of algorithms integrated into the intelligent shooting system:

  • AI Object Tracking — automatic recognition and tracking of objects in the frame
  • AI SpinShot — creation of smooth rotational movements without manual control
  • 4DoF-stabilization — a four-axis stabilization system that compensates for movement and vibrations

At the same time, these technologies form a scenario in which the camera does not just capture the image, but actively “directs” the shooting process in real time.

Influence of the film industry and ARRI’s involvement

HONOR’s cooperation with the German company ARRI – one of the most authoritative manufacturers of professional film equipment in the world – attracted special attention at the presentation. ARRI cameras are used in Hollywood and have won numerous technical awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The integration of ARRI’s work into a mobile device looks like an attempt to blur the line between professional filmmaking and smartphone content. For the industry, this is a signal: mobile devices are gradually claiming part of the professional segment.

Smartphone for the era of short video

The HONOR Robot Phone is clearly aimed at the generation of content creators working on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. Where previously stabilizers, operators and complex equipment were needed, now one device is enough, which itself monitors the frame and the movement of the scene.

In fact, it is an attempt to turn a smartphone into an autonomous shooting tool capable of minimizing the technical barriers between an idea and a finished video.

Exit prospects

The official launch of the HONOR Robot Phone is expected in the third quarter of 2026.
