Ukraine ranked sixth in the world in terms of consumption of pirated content, behind the USA, India, Russia, the UK and Canada. Such data was published by UABlockList with reference to Bloomberg.

The situation with piracy in Ukraine

According to SimilarWeb, the most popular sites among Ukrainian users are Google, YouTube and the pirate resource UAKino, which occupies the third position. At the beginning of December 2024, among the 50 most visited sites in Ukraine, eight turned out to be pirated, while none of the legal streaming services, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime, made it to this list.

Visit rate

The most popular pirate sites in Ukraine and their visit rate (approximately):

  • Filmix: 40.4 million.
  • HDRezka: 22.5 million.
  • Kinogo: 21.5 million.
  • Kinobar: 12.4 million.

  • UAKino: 127.9 million. (including alternative domains).
  • HDRezka: 83.3 million.
  • Filmix: 41.2 million.
  • Kinogo: 34.1 million.
  • Kinokrad: 6.5 million.

Legal services in Ukraine

The traffic of legal streaming platforms is significantly lower:

  • Netflix: 4.3 million visits.
  • MEGOGO: 6.3 million.
  • Sweet.tv: 2.4 million.
  • TV.Kyivstar.ua: 2 million.
  • Prime Video: 0.5 million.

Reasons for the popularity of piracy

Pirate resources offer free access to content, including movies and TV series, while legal platforms require a paid subscription. Also, insufficient awareness of the benefits of legal content consumption and the lack of localized content on many services are important factors contributing to the popularity of pirated platforms.

Ukraine has significant potential for the development of a legal digital content market. However, this requires effective measures to combat piracy, as well as stimulating the development of accessible, localized, and convenient streaming platforms.
