YouTube launches automatic labeling of AI content

The video platform YouTube no longer intends to rely entirely on the good faith of authors when using artificial intelligence in videos. The service runs a system of automatic detection and labeling of videos created or significantly modified using realistic AI technologies. Special marks about the synthetic origin of content will become more visible and will be displayed both in full-length videos and in YouTube Shorts. The main goal of the innovation is to increase the transparency of content and reduce the risks of spreading misinformation.

How automatic labeling of AI content will work

YouTube clarified that bloggers are still required to self-indicate the use of realistic artificial intelligence through Creator Studio. However, the platform will now be able to automatically provide appropriate markings if built-in algorithms detect signs of generation or digital substitution.

Such a policy has been developing for several years. Previously, YouTube introduced rules for mandatory marking of realistic simulations of people, famous places and socially significant events. At the same time, artistic animation, fantastic scenes and obviously invented materials are still not subject to restrictions.

Why YouTube is tightening its control over AI videos

The strengthening of moderation is connected with the rapid development of generative models capable of creating extremely realistic video content. The industry pays special attention to new developments by Google, including the family of Gemini Omni models, which are able to accurately reproduce the physics of movement, the behavior of objects and visual details.

Modern AI tools already make it possible to generate videos of such high quality that it becomes difficult for an ordinary viewer to determine the fact of the artificial origin of the video. That is why automatic mechanisms for recognizing deep fakes and synthetic content are becoming a key element of the digital security of platforms.

When the system starts working

YouTube started active implementation of new detection algorithms in May of this year. Automated analysis systems will continuously check uploaded videos for signs of AI generation.

Where the generation marks will be displayed

YouTube decided to make warnings about synthetic content more visible to the audience. The main label will be placed directly under the video player – in front of the block with the description of the video.

At the same time, for videos with minimal use of AI or for fantastic content, the system will keep the previous display format: the message will remain inside the section with a detailed description.

Will markup affect monetization

The company emphasizes that the new marks are for informational purposes only. The presence of an AI flag does not affect recommendations, reach or the ability to connect to standard affiliate monetization, as long as the video itself does not violate the Community Guidelines.

Possible errors of algorithms and appeals

Similar technologies have already faced problems on other platforms. For example, Meta’s algorithms have repeatedly mistakenly labeled real photos as AI-generated, while missing sophisticated photo-realistic fakes.

YouTube claims to have taken such risks into account. Authors will have access to an appeals system that allows them to challenge automatic marking and seek the removal of erroneous markings from original content.
