The European Union is preparing to limit children’s access to social networks
14.07.26
The European Commission plans to introduce new legislation limiting the use of social networks by minors in the European Union. This was stated by the head of the commission, Ursula von der Leyen, based on the recommendations of an expert group on protecting children from harmful online content.
Under the draft proposals, children under 13 would have strict and limited access to social platforms that would require supervision. As you grow older, age restrictions will gradually relax.
New responsibility for IT giants
The key change will be a shift in responsibility from parents to the development companies themselves. Platforms will be required to prove that their service is safe for young audiences before being allowed to work with this age group.
Time frame for implementing the initiative
The European Commission intends to present an official draft of the bill immediately after the summer season. Details of the initiative are expected to be announced by Ursula von der Leyen during her State of the Union address in September.
World experience of network restrictions
The European approach continues the global trend. Australia became a pioneer by legally banning social media for children under 16 last year. Similar initiatives have already been approved or are being actively discussed in France, Greece, Canada and the UK.
