Tesla expands autonomous ride network in Texas as robotaxi service launches in Dallas and Houston
20.04.26
Tesla continues to gradually scale its driverless transportation service in the United States, extending its coverage beyond initial testing zones. The robotaxi system has now officially launched in two additional major Texas cities — Dallas and Houston. The company announced the expansion via social media platform X, sharing a short video showing electric vehicles operating without a driver or a person in the front passenger seat.
Gradual geographic expansion of the service
At present, the robotaxi service Tesla is operating in three Texas cities. Austin was the first location, where the pilot program was launched earlier, and since January 2026 the company has been offering rides without a driver in a fully automated mode.
At the same time, Tesla’s February financial report noted that since launch, such vehicles have been involved in 14 road incidents. The company did not disclose further details regarding these cases.
Limited testing and gradual scaling
Separately, Tesla previously conducted ride-service testing with drivers in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the technology is not yet operating in a fully automated mode. This approach allows the company to systematically evaluate the system under different operating conditions before broader deployment.
In the new cities — Dallas and Houston — only one vehicle is currently in operation in each location, while Austin already has a fleet of several dozen robotaxis, indicating a more mature stage of testing in that region.
