Sony and AMD Partner to Bring AI Frame Generation to PlayStation

Sony and AMD Partner to Bring AI Frame Generation to PlayStation

Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for Sony PlayStation, recently confirmed that the company is collaborating closely with AMD to integrate AI-driven frame generation into the console ecosystem. The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance frame rates significantly without the need for more robust hardware upgrades.

The partnership is focused on “Project Amethyst,” a specialized machine learning graphics technology tailored specifically for PlayStation’s internal architecture. This project leverages AMD’s upcoming FSR Redstone suite, which provides a comprehensive foundation including upscaling, frame generation, and advanced ray reconstruction.

It is worth noting that the existing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature already shares several fundamental components with AMD’s FSR Redstone. Consequently, this upcoming update represents a sophisticated evolution of current technology rather than a completely new departure.

However, Cerny clarified that this AI-powered feature is not expected to debut in the immediate future, ruling out a release within this year. Despite the wait, the groundwork laid by Sony and AMD suggests that a first look at the technology could potentially arrive sometime next year.
