Resident Evil: not according to the canon, but with atmosphere

Fans of the iconic franchise got a first look at the new chapter of the movie universe: Sony has published the debut teaser trailer for the new Resident Evil movie. Unlike previous attempts to bring the story of the original source to the screen, the new film directed by Zach Cragger will offer viewers a unique perspective on a familiar disaster.

Director Zach Cragger, known for his ambitious projects, decided not to go down the path of directly copying the plot of the games. Instead of retelling the story of Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield, Resident Evil will focus on a new hero. The director’s goal is to show the character’s path from point A to point B, while maintaining the survival atmosphere that made the game series legendary.

Characteristics and description of characters

The central role in the film – a hero named Brian – will be played by actor Austin Abrams. The script focuses on Brian’s personal journey through the ruined Raccoon City. According to the director, the choice of a new protagonist was a conscious decision: the story of Leon in the games has already been told perfectly, and any attempt to change it could lead to the disappointment of fans. The tape will also have the dynamics of the progression of weapons: starting with an ordinary pistol, the hero will gradually find a shotgun and an MP5, constantly facing a shortage of cartridges.

Resident Evil release date

The official premiere of the film in cinemas is scheduled for September 18, 2026. Fans are looking forward to this date to see how Cragger manages to combine classic horror with Sony’s cinematic scale.

Game connection and differences

Although the film is not a direct adaptation, its events develop in parallel with the plot of Resident Evil 2. The main character passes through Raccoon City, facing the same threats as the protagonists of the game, but his path is “on the sidelines” of the main game events. This allows you to maintain fidelity to the canon without contradicting it. Cragger also confirmed the presence of a large number of easter eggs, especially for the fourth part of the game – Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil is only part of a large-scale wave of game adaptations. Gamers can expect a number of major premieres in the coming years:
