Realistic faces for robots: China bets on “human-like” technology
03.04.26
China’s robotics sector is not only advancing in functionality but also focusing on appearance. Increasing attention is being paid to creating highly realistic human faces for humanoid robots, sparking active discussion among experts.
Viral videos drive interest
The discussion gained momentum after a video shared by the founder of Shouxing Technology, Yuhan Hu. It showcases a robot with an extremely lifelike female face, capable of blinking, scanning its surroundings, and reacting in a human-like manner.
The companies behind the tech
The hyper-realistic design was developed by AheadForm, which previously gained attention with its Elf V1 model released in 2025. That robot also featured expressive facial movements and environmental awareness.
Why appearance matters
Experts point out that functionality alone is no longer enough for commercial success. While robots already perform well in industrial tasks, their adoption in everyday life depends heavily on how comfortable people feel interacting with them.
Emotional connection as a key factor
A common argument is that humanoids without realistic faces remain purely functional tools and fail to build trust or emotional engagement. Meanwhile, traditional industrial robots, despite their efficiency, are not seen as groundbreaking since simpler and cheaper solutions already exist.
Technology behind “living” expressions
Some Chinese companies are already showcasing robotic heads equipped with synthetic skin, micro-actuators, and AI-driven systems. These robots can blink, track faces, and display subtle emotional expressions.
Future in service industries
Such developments are viewed as a crucial step toward integrating robots into service sectors, where human interaction is essential. The ability to exhibit “social behavior” may ultimately determine their success in the market.
