ChatGPT Locked Chats Spotted: PIN and Biometric Security

OpenAI developers are planning to expand security features in ChatGPT by introducing a tool called Locked Chats. As revealed by an analysis of the Android app code (version 1.2026.230), users will soon be able to protect their dialogues using a PIN code or biometric data (such as a fingerprint).

Locked Chats Feature

Locked Chats is designed to keep important or personal conversations away from prying eyes. A locked chat will be completely removed from the sidebar list, activity history, and search results. Accessing such a conversation will only be possible after passing verification.

Key Features and Functionality

• Protection: Entering a locked chat will require your account PIN or fingerprint scan.
• Lock Mode: The chat remains secured until the user manually deactivates the lock for that specific dialogue. This is critical if your device is temporarily handled by colleagues or relatives.
• Memory System: Locked Chats will feature unique settings. They will be able to “see” the neural network memory accumulated in regular chats; however, new data (memories) created within a locked dialogue will not spill over into regular conversations.

Privacy Nuances

It is important to note that the lock protects the visibility of the dialogue content on the device, rather than clearing the accumulated OpenAI memory. Previously saved ChatGPT data from that chat will not be erased—it will simply be hidden from quick access on the device.

This feature differs from the existing “Temporary Chats” mode. While temporary chats are not saved in history and are deleted by the system after 30 days, “Locked Chats” are persistent and retain context for long-term use.

Release Date

At the moment, OpenAI has not officially confirmed the release of this feature. The information is based on findings in the Android app code, indicating that it is in the development stage.

If OpenAI does implement Locked Chats in its current form, ChatGPT will become significantly better equipped for handling private conversations and confidential information. The ability to hide an individual chat behind a PIN or biometrics will add an extra layer of privacy where a standard archive is no longer enough. However, since Locked Chats remains just a discovery in the Android app code, it is too early to treat it as a finished feature.
