Qualcomm goes into AI: ByteDance will buy millions of chips for TikTok and Doubao
28.05.26
American giant Qualcomm has entered into a strategic agreement with Chinese conglomerate ByteDance, which owns the popular TikTok platform, to supply specialized processors for its data centers. The new deal will allow Qualcomm to enter the fast-growing infrastructure hardware solutions market for artificial intelligence systems and compete with established industry leaders.
Details of the agreement
According to Bloomberg, the Chinese company ByteDance intends to purchase millions of highly specialized AI chips manufactured by Qualcomm. These chips, designed as specialized integrated circuits (ASICs), will directly enable the high-performance operation of the software and internal artificial intelligence agents of the Chinese media giant.
The partnership with the owner of TikTok became an important milestone for Qualcomm itself, which was associated primarily with the development of processors for mobile devices. Currently, the Californian company is consolidating its position in the lucrative hardware market for server AI infrastructure. News of the partnership sparked an immediate market reaction, with Qualcomm shares rising more than 8% to record intraday gains.
Technical features of processors and production
The integration of ByteDance’s AI solutions was built on the basis of the company’s own chip developments. The deal with Qualcomm will help ByteDance quickly transform its existing circuit designs into ready-to-use, high-performance, commercial silicon chips. One of the key features of the supply will be strict compliance with the sanctions framework:
- Physical production of the new ASIC processors will be established through large manufacturing partners, including the Taiwanese holding company TSMC.
- Experts note that as long as the performance of the chips supplied will be strictly within the limits allowed by the American regulator, the export of finished silicon products from Qualcomm to the PRC will not be subject to the restrictive export measures of the US Department of Commerce.
ByteDance investment and Doubao project
ByteDance is rapidly increasing its spending on next-generation computing. Just recently it became known that the AI direction of the corporation allocated a huge financial budget — the company’s capital investment immediately increased by 25% and totaled about 200 billion yuan (that’s about 29.4 billion dollars).
A significant part of the invested resources will go specifically to the maintenance of its key dialogue AI system. Doubao’s software shell, which resembles the AI services Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude in its key features, has gained unofficial status as a text-based chatbot in China’s rapidly growing and downloading ecosystem over the past year.
Features of the competitive environment: can Qualcomm push Nvidia
To date, the NVIDIA corporation remains the undisputed monopolist in the niche of specialized supercomputing for AI infrastructure. However, its direct pursuers in the name of AMD, Broadcom, Google with its AI hardware TPU and now Qualcomm are leading a systematic offensive. The fact that the CEO of Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon, even in the April financial conference briefly intrigued investors with large deals that were being prepared with unnamed tech giants at that time, indicates a serious strategy of Qualcomm’s attack on the data centers of the new generation.
