Google Meet now offers simultaneous call translation on smartphones: the feature has arrived on Android and iOS.

Google Meet has expanded its live translation capabilities beyond the web version, bringing the feature to mobile apps on Android and iOS. The update enables users to translate spoken language during video calls almost in real time directly on smartphones, according to Neowin.

Previously, the feature was limited to the browser version, but Google is now gradually scaling it to mobile platforms. The system automatically processes speech and generates translations without the need for human interpreters or third-party tools. At launch, it supports two-way translation between English and five languages: Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian.

How the feature works in calls

The technology is designed for live meetings where fast comprehension of participants’ speech is essential. Translation is generated automatically with minimal delay, allowing conversations to flow naturally.

However, usage remains limited: only two languages can be selected per meeting. Once chosen, the language configuration cannot be changed during the call, making pre-selection necessary.

The system also separates incoming and outgoing audio: users can hear translated speech from others, but their own voice is not translated for participants in real time.

Settings and rollout

In the mobile version of Google Meet, live translation is enabled by default. It can be disabled in the app settings under the “Tools” section if needed.

The rollout began on April 8 and is being introduced gradually. Full availability for all users is expected within approximately 15 days of launch.

Future development

Google states that the feature is still in active development. Upcoming updates are expected to improve speech recognition accuracy and refine the user interface.

At this time, expansion to additional languages, including Ukrainian, has not been announced.
