Hugging Face Reveals Microduck: An AI-Powered Robot Duck

Hugging Face, primarily known as a platform for developing and distributing artificial intelligence models, continues to expand into robotics. The company has introduced Microduck, a small robot designed as an accessible platform for studying AI in the physical world.

The project stands out from most modern developments in the field. Instead of a humanoid design focused on complex mechanics, Hugging Face opted for a compact body standing just 25 cm tall and weighing about 700 grams. The company expects this form factor to attract not only professional developers but also beginner enthusiasts to robotics.

Small Frame, Big Sensors

Despite its size, Microduck comes equipped with the necessary components to interact with its environment. The robot features a camera, microphone, speaker, and LiDAR, with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for wireless connectivity.

Two NFC readers are integrated into the design, specifically for interacting with accessories and allowing for the expansion of the device’s capabilities without significant hardware modifications.

Microduck weighs about 0.7 kg and is 25 cm tall. Due to its small size, it can be used not only as an autonomous toy but also as an experimental platform for working with machine learning algorithms.

A Smart Little Robot

Hugging Face is focusing not only on the technical aspects but also on demonstrating the capabilities of physical AI. Microduck can move on rollers, pick up and carry small objects, and even sing in sync with other robots in the series.

The main idea of the project is not a set of pre-programmed entertainment features. Users are given the ability to experiment with the robot’s behavior independently, including training it for various physical actions using reinforcement learning and simulations.

The software portion of the project is open-source. This allows developers to explore the device from within, modify its behavior algorithms, and create their own interaction scenarios.

Accessible Robotics

According to Hugging Face co-founder Thomas Wolf, Microduck is aimed at a broad audience. The company views it simultaneously as an entertainment device and an educational platform for practically studying the application of artificial intelligence in the physical environment.

Hugging Face intends to expand the robot’s capabilities in the future through additional software and hardware packages. Thus, the base version is intended to serve as a starting point for more complex experiments.

The development of Microduck was handled by Pollen Robotics, while production is managed by Seeed Studio in Shenzhen.

Price and Future Plans

Microduck will cost $400. The robot is expected to go on sale closer to the Christmas season.

Hugging Face aims to sell at least 20,000 units. If the company meets this goal, Microduck could become a significant example of how AI developers are trying to move neural network experiments beyond screens and servers into the physical world.

Furthermore, Hugging Face views robotics not as a separate pursuit for creating unusual gadgets, but as the next stage in the development of open AI technologies. In this context, Microduck serves as an experimental sandbox where algorithms can be tested not on virtual tasks, but on real-world objects and movements.
