Google Maps will get a battery saving mode

Google Maps dark mode

Google is working on a new feature for its mapping service – “Power Saving Mode” in Google Maps. It simplifies the interface by removing most colors and visual elements to reduce battery consumption during navigation. As a result, only routes, turns, key landmarks, and basic driving information are displayed on the screen.

First Mentions

According to Android Authority, the first mentions of the feature appeared in Google Maps beta version 25.44.03.824313610. Developers discovered clues about how it works in the program code. The mode is currently activated in an unusual way: the user must press the power button while navigating, after which the interface switches to monochrome.

What does Power Saving Mode in Google Maps do?

This format removes street names, traffic information, and reference information such as the location of cafes, pharmacies, and gas stations. Only the most important elements remain on the screen: next turns, travel time, distance, and estimated arrival time. This is intended to reduce the load on the display and processor, extending the smartphone’s battery life.

This mode supports navigation for cars, bicycles, and pedestrians, but it is unclear whether it will be available for public transportation. At this testing stage, the feature only works in portrait mode; switching to landscape mode automatically disables it. Voice prompts remain active.

The official launch date for the new mode has not yet been announced; Google is likely continuing internal testing and fine-tuning the features.
