Global electric vehicle market in early 2026: boom in Europe amid decline in China and the US.

In the first quarter of 2026, global electric vehicle sales reached approximately 4 million units, but market development was highly uneven across regions. Overall, the figure declined by 3% compared to the same period in 2025, according to Electrek, based on a report by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

March softened the weak start of the quarter, but did not change the trend

The most active month was March: around 1.75 million electric vehicles were sold globally. This is 66% higher than February’s result and 3% above March of the previous year.

Despite a pronounced spike at the end of the quarter, it only partially offset the weak performance of the first months of the year. As a result, the market maintained a volatile growth structure, where individual surges do not form a stable trend.

Europe becomes the main growth hub

The European region effectively took on the role of the main driver of the electric vehicle market. In March, the symbolic threshold of 500,000 sales in a single month was crossed for the first time, marking an all-time high.

Over the quarter, the region recorded 37% year-on-year growth, while monthly dynamics showed a 72% surge. Key factors included government support programs and rising fuel prices amid ongoing geopolitical instability.

Record results were seen in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Spain. France stood out in particular, where rising fuel costs acted as an additional catalyst for the shift away from internal combustion engine vehicles.

At the same time, the penetration of Chinese automakers continues to strengthen, with companies aggressively expanding their presence in the European market.

China and the United States: policy pressure and cooling demand

China, the world’s largest electric vehicle market, showed a short-term recovery in March after a seasonal decline, but the overall quarterly result remains negative — down 21%.

Domestic demand is significantly affected by changes in government policy, prompting manufacturers to increasingly redirect shipments toward foreign markets. However, excess supply is already accumulating abroad, limiting expansion potential.

In North America, the situation is even more strained: sales declined by 27% year-on-year. Despite this, March showed localized recovery amid rising fuel prices.

In the United States, more than 100,000 electric vehicles were sold — the highest level since the cancellation of tax incentives in 2025. However, several automakers are already revising investments and scaling back electric vehicle programs.

Secondary markets show accelerated growth from a low base

The fastest growth rates are recorded in countries with relatively small market volumes. In Australia and New Zealand, electric vehicle sales increased by tens and even hundreds of percent.

The main drivers are rising fuel prices and gradual changes in consumer behavior, which are accelerating the transition to electric transport even beyond traditional industry leaders.
