Google Sets September 15 for Googlebooks and New OS Reveal
20.08.26
Google has officially scheduled the presentation for its ambitious new project: the Googlebooks laptop series. The official launch will take place on September 15 at a special event in New York. Plans for these devices first surfaced in May, when developers confirmed that the devices would run on an Android-based operating system.
A New Operating System
The presentation will focus on both hardware and the software platform. While rumors previously dubbed it “Aluminum OS,” there is no official confirmation of the name yet. It is known, however, that the system architecture will move significantly closer to Android by utilizing the platform’s native tech stack. Essentially, the upcoming OS is a hybrid of Chrome OS and Android, integrating the latter’s native codebase.
Specs and Partners
Google is prioritizing premium build quality and diverse device form factors. A key design feature across all models is the “Glowbar,” an element that has already appeared in early leaks. The initial hardware manufacturers partnering with Google include:
- Asus
- HP
- Lenovo
- Dell
What Is Google’s Glowbar
Glowbar (Glow Bar) is a signature quad-color LED strip on the lid of premium Googlebook laptops that serves the following functions:
- AI Indicator: Pulses and changes colors to visualize Gemini AI activity.
- Battery Control: Displays battery level while the lid is closed (by double-tapping the cover).
- Notifications: Animates for system alerts, calls, and voice commands.
- Brand Marker: A mandatory Google design element for all partners (ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, HP) signifying the device’s flagship status.
Event Expectations
The New York event will bring together journalists from around the globe. Organizers promise ample time for hands-on experience with the first Googlebooks units, benchmarking, and real-time performance testing. While final pricing and specific model configurations remain under wraps, these details are expected to be disclosed during the presentation.
