US Youth Distrust AI Giants: A Growing Crisis of Confidence

Кризис доверия к IT-элите: почему молодежь США опасается влияния ИИ-компаний

The technological optimism of Silicon Valley leaders has collided with a harsh reality: a new joint study by CNBC and Generation Lab has uncovered deep skepticism among the younger generation regarding artificial intelligence. A survey of 1,088 Americans aged 18 to 34 showed that Gen Z and millennials view AI more as a threat to their future than as a source of new opportunities.

Youth Attitudes Toward Careers and AI Regulation

According to the data, 45% of respondents are convinced that artificial intelligence will negatively impact their career development. Only 10% of participants are optimistic, believing the technology will benefit them. Regarding government oversight, opinions are split: 40% support direct regulation by the federal government, while 36% insist on the need to create an independent expert body to monitor the industry. Only 8% are categorically opposed to any intervention.

A significant portion of respondents, specifically 60%, advocates for slowing down the construction of new data centers, while only 15% support accelerating the industry.

Distrust Levels for AI Executive Leadership

The survey results demonstrate a catastrophically low level of trust in the executives of companies shaping the future of AI. The greatest rejection is directed at figures closely associated with military and corporate sector developments:

Leadership Distrust Statistics (Table)

Executive Distrust Level
Alex Karp (Palantir) 81%
Peter Thiel (Palantir) 79%
Dario Amodei (Anthropic) 76%
Sundar Pichai (Google) 74%
Jensen Huang (NVIDIA) 71%
Mark Zuckerberg (Meta) 71%
Elon Musk 70%
Sam Altman (OpenAI) 69%
Satya Nadella (Microsoft) 65%

Economic Sentiment

Young Americans are also critical of the current economic situation, with about 80% of those surveyed considering it unsatisfactory. Only 5% rated the state of the economy as “good” or “excellent,” while 50% predict further deterioration. The margin of error for the study was 2.97%.

The findings illustrate a growing divide between the IT elite and the young working class. Against a backdrop of general economic uncertainty, the youth perceive rapid AI integration not as progress but as a direct threat to stability, making the demand for strict industry regulation a top priority for them.
