Samsung Wallet Adds Digital Key Support for Volkswagen EVs
20.08.26
Samsung has officially announced an expansion of its Samsung Wallet app features. Users can now use a Digital Key for access to a wide range of Volkswagen electric vehicles. This update simplifies vehicle operation, allowing users to ditch physical keys entirely.
Supported Volkswagen Models and Requirements
The new feature is designed for owners of ID series electric vehicles. The list of compatible models includes: ID. Polo, ID. Cross, ID.3neo, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID. Buzz. A key requirement is the vehicle software: it must run on ID. software version 6.0.1 or higher.
The function applies to cars manufactured on or after April 27, 2026. Additionally, the electric vehicle must be equipped with the optional “Preparation for Digital Key” hardware package.
Samsung Digital Key Features
The technology allows users to lock, unlock, and start their car engine using a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. For maximum convenience, two data transmission standards are implemented:
- UWB (Ultra-Wideband) — for hands-free access.
- NFC — for quick unlocking and starting by tapping the phone against the sensor.
A remote trunk release feature (Remote Key Entry) is also included.

Security and Access Management
Security is a core aspect of the new development. Samsung digital keys meet the international EAL6+ security standard. They are securely stored directly on the mobile device and protected by the proprietary Samsung Knox platform.
Car owners can securely share access to their vehicle via the Samsung Wallet app, granting rights to trusted individuals for a limited time. In case of smartphone loss or theft, the user can promptly lock or completely remove the digital key via the Samsung Find service, preventing unauthorized third-party access to the vehicle.
