Disc War: Gamers Begin Boycott of Sony
06.07.26
After Sony’s announcement that it will end the release of physical copies of games for PlayStation consoles from 2028, the gaming community has started a campaign of protest. Owners of set-top boxes are massively canceling subscriptions to the PlayStation Plus service, calling on other users to follow their example and influence the corporation’s decisions.
Why are gamers canceling PS Plus subscriptions in droves?
The initiative was born in social networks, in particular in X (formerly Twitter) and on Reddit. A user with the nickname Pyo has become a central figure in the movement, with his call to vote with his wallet gaining more than 150,000 views. He has been actively posting screenshots of canceled subscriptions and detailed instructions on exactly how users can turn off the auto-renewal of their PS Plus membership. The main link of the action: a demonstration of dissatisfaction with the company’s course to completely abandon physical media.
Sony’s official solution for disc versions of games
Sony’s decision is to completely switch to an exclusively digital game distribution format starting in January 2028. The company claims this step as a desire for progress, but among gamers, the initiative was perceived as frankly anti-consumer.
Why are gamers afraid of the transition to “digital”?
The main claim of the players concerns the preservation of access to the content in the future. Previously, Sony had already announced the closure of digital stores for PS3 and PS Vita, which set a dangerous precedent: after shutting down the servers, users could permanently lose access to previously purchased games. The abandonment of discs, combined with the vulnerability of digital distribution, raises serious concerns about the “disappearance” of video game heritage.
Community perspectives and reactions
Despite the high activity on the network, many gamers remain skeptical, admitting that a one-time promotion is unlikely to force Sony to change its approved strategy. However, the main goal of the protesters is to emphasize the importance of the rights of consumers to own the purchased content. Despite the fact that sales statistics show a clear leadership of “digital” over physical media, for a significant part of the loyal audience, the physical copy remains the only guarantor of the safety of their personal library of games.
