China Approves First Brain Implant for Commercial Use
15.03.26
China has granted its first approval for the commercial use of an invasive brain-computer interface (BCI). The National Medical Products Administration authorized Neuracle Technology to market its brain implant for adult patients who are partially paralyzed due to spinal cord injuries.
Technical Details and Clinical Trials
The product was tested on 36 patients, helping them improve their ability to grasp and hold objects. The system includes several components:
- Implanted brain sensors
- A robotic glove
- Surgical instruments
- An algorithm for reading brain signals
- Specialized software for medical tests and clinical observation
The implant is placed outside the brain’s outer membrane and features fewer signal detection channels compared to more advanced devices. It is specifically approved for patients who still retain some motor function in their upper bodies.
Market Impact and Strategic Goals
Following the announcement, shares of Sanbo Hospital Management Group Ltd., Innovation Medical Management Co., and Nanjing Panda Electronics Co. rose by more than 10%. This approval is part of a broader Chinese government strategy to reach key technical milestones by 2027 and establish a complete BCI supply chain by 2030.
