A working Apple-1 from the first batch was put up for auction at Sotheby’s
14.07.26
Sotheby’s auction house announced a large-scale auction called “History of Science and Technology”. As part of the event, collectors will be presented with rare devices that marked milestones in the development of the industry.
Working Apple-1 from the first batch: legend 1976
One of the central lots was a fully functional Apple-1 computer with serial number 01-0033. It is part of an historic first batch of 50 PCs hand-assembled by Steve Wozniak.
The device’s owner, Harry Sadler, purchased it from the legendary Byte Shop in 1976. An interesting historical fact is that Sadler personally met Steve Jobs while returning this computer to the repair shop. Later, already in 2010, Jobs bought the startup Siri, where Sadler was working at that time.
Characteristics and equipment
The device is completely authentic and comes with a set of original accessories:
- Cassette deck and matching vintage monitor
- Branded keyboard
- Original Apple-1 user manual
- Cassette Module Interface Guide
- Additional training materials and vintage software on cassettes
Price
According to Sotheby’s experts, the price of a rare computer will be from $300,000 to $500,000. Translated at the current exchange rate, this is approximately from 12,171,000 to 20,285,000 hryvnias.
NeXT PC and other rare technologies
In addition to the rare Apple, the auction will present other iconic devices of Steve Jobs, namely: NeXT demonstration computers used at the NeXT Introduction presentation in 1988, as well as their counterparts for the European market. The list of lots also includes:
- Sealed vintage Macintosh computers
- Computer Mark-8 model 1974
- MITS Altair 8800 PC (1974)
The auction will start on July 15 in New York. In addition to computer equipment, items that belonged to the greatest scientists, such as Albert Einstein, Alexander Bell, Thomas Edison and Richard Feynman, will be auctioned.
